There is something very special about diamonds. Perhaps it’s their ability to reflect light in exciting ways. Be it for the expectations implied or for the very beauty and exquisiteness of their possession. However, purchasing a diamond can test the nerves of even the most astute buyer - what do you look for? What do the terms mean? What makes one diamond worth more than another?

Diamond Engagement Rings

Here is a short aide-memoir for the vital points in diamond grading. It will help the diamond dealer greatly, if you’re able to converse with him in language he understands. And this in turn will help you to get the stones that you would like.

Diamond appraisers look for four qualities in a diamond when discerning its value. To the diamond specialist these are cut, clarity, color and carat.

If you are planning on using the diamonds for a necklace, all these things must be understood.

The CUT

There are two aspects referred to when discussing the cut of a diamond. The cut of the diamond will affect both its brilliance and its shape, and the skillful cutter will manage to get beautiful shapes and great brilliance. Diamonds are shaped in many different ways.

The best known are:- round, oval, pear (teardrop shaped), heart, princess (square shaped), Emerald (rectangular shaped), marquise (football shaped) and round. Round diamonds are those which radiate the greatest brilliance. The brilliance of the diamond is directly related to its ability to reflect light.

It is in the skill of the cutter to create the facets which will reflect the light and therefore the brilliance. Beware of diamonds cut to maintain a higher carat weight while sacrificing the cutting of a good angle as this will dramatically reduce the brilliance.

The CLARITY

Diamond is a natural material generally mined from the ground and therefore it will also contain flaws and traces of other materials. A truly flawless diamond is almost impossible to come by. Although it is normally impossible to see the flaws without a microscope, they affect the ability of the diamond to reflect light and therefore its brilliance.

The general classification for diamond clarity is:- Flawless, IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, SI3, I1, I2 and I3.

The CARAT Weight

A carat is the measure of a diamond’s weight. One carat may also be referred to as ‘100 points’. A quarter of a carat would be 25 points, and so on.

An expensive diamond will be larger than a cheaper one. The rarity value of larger diamonds causes them to increase in cost significantly over their smaller brethren. A single diamond weighing one carat will cost much more than a number of smaller diamonds weighing one carat in total.

The COLOR

A diamond’s color is rated using an alphabetical index from D to Z. A colorless diamond normally known as white would receive a rating of D. This is the rarest and most sought after. A colorless diamond is more valuable than a yellow one and the former will be found in the range D to J.

Diamonds with a color rating beyond Z contain some famous diamonds such as the Blue Hope. When setting out to purchase a diamond please remember that these four characteristics are of equal importance and the diamond should be assessed bearing these things in mind.

Because the perfect diamond is way beyond the budget of the average purchaser even if it were to exist, it is sensible to rate the four characteristics in order of priority when choosing your diamond.

Make a list of the important points - and here is a start for you ….

  • Prioritize your requirements
  • What color diamond would you like?
  • Do you feel confident to buy diamonds without professional help?

When a jeweler creates engagement rings, he may not incorporate diamonds, but the knowledge is still important. In any event, any piece of diamond jewelry should be a work of art, and very special.
